about

There she was, a silhouette in the darkness
A soul captivated by a world for the heartless
An empty vessel adrift in the water for days
A maze of infinite passages, she couldn’t find her way

A genius as a child, she was the artistic quiet type
She’d lay awake at night, eyes open, praying for daylight
To erase the demons that haunted from the nether regions
Or to muffle the screaming of her mother being fucked or beaten
By age 12 the hell became a pain she couldn’t expel
I remember the night I took her diary from the shelf
As I delved through the pages her anguish became contagious
The stages of stress and depression coursed through my spirit
As I read how she faded

She said “god if you ever existed how could this world be afflicted
By this miserable condition
I prayed for you daily to take me out of this place
My mother hates the sight of my face
Is it because I remind her of her youth once full of grace
Or is it that she can’t stand to see me embrace the fact that her life’s become a waste
Can anyone hear me?
I’m scared, I’m not prepared for what’s waiting for me but it has to be better than here
If I fall will anyone catch me?

I remember walking on the train tracks that night
Off in the distance was a faint light
And the brief vibration of my destiny waiting
Why did I step to the side and feel the wind collide with my eyelids
It felt like I could fly and I didn’t want to die
But now I do”

She looked intense as she slept
Empty bottles on the floor from the medicine cabinet
As I lifted her head, I felt her pillow was wet
I caressed her cheek
Her eyes began to peek but before she could speak
I said “Be still child, this is your final instance of pain
I’ve been watching you for a while
This world was not meant for you to stay”
Then I held her hand as we walked into the darkness
On the path to eternity, it was her catharsis

He always felt different, a person of color
But when he walked through the crowded room nobody called him brother
He felt the eyes penetrate his entire being
As if he were some object of spectacle only to exist for the seeing
But he was used to this feeling so he embraced it
He’d laugh as he danced alone though his soul felt naked
Escaped, with a hit or a tab or a sniff or a drink or a spliff
Or a walk along the cliff or the edge or the ledge or the bridge
No joke kid, this is how he lived
Or at least pretended to

I remember that night as he stared down at his destiny
Could he feel my presence as he stood to the left of me?
He spoke softly as his mind drift away
He said “God if you ever existed why did you make me this way?
Why am I responsible to tell them it’s ok to be gay?
Is this the journey of your son to change the mind of a people?
If they’re his followers, tell me why they’re so evil
Perhaps I can show them more through death than through life
Maybe they’ll understand my pain on the other side of the night
Can anyone hear me?”

His eyes opened wide as we fell toward the earth
He stayed silent, almost defiant as I recited this verse
“Be still child, this is your final instance of pain
I’ve been watching you for a while
This world was not meant for you to stay”
Then I held his hand as we walked into the darkness
On the path to eternity, it was his catharsis

After 5 records, hundreds of shows, a tour of Cuba, and performances as many legendary protests, they are not together anymore, but their music stands and is as relevant as it ever was.
